Vaginal Hysterectomy with Pelvic Floor Repair
Surgical removal of the uterus through the vagina combined with comprehensive pelvic floor repair — the definitive treatment for uterine prolapse with associated bladder and bowel support defects.
What is Vaginal Hysterectomy with Pelvic Floor Repair?
Vaginal hysterectomy with pelvic floor repair combines the vaginal removal of the uterus with simultaneous repair of the pelvic floor defects — anterior (cystocele) and posterior (rectocele) compartments — that commonly coexist with uterine prolapse. It is a well-established, comprehensive approach that corrects the prolapse, removes the uterus, and restores normal pelvic support through a single vaginal route without abdominal incisions. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs this procedure at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, tailoring the repair to each patient's anatomical defects.
Suitable for women with symptomatic uterine prolapse — particularly those with coexisting cystocele or rectocele — who have completed childbearing and in whom vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair is the appropriate surgical approach.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Positioning
General or spinal anaesthesia is administered. The patient is positioned in the lithotomy position and the vaginal operative field is prepared.
Uterosacral & Cardinal Ligament Division
The uterosacral and cardinal ligaments are divided sequentially, entering the anterior and posterior peritoneum to mobilise the uterus from the vaginal route.
Uterine Removal
The uterus is delivered through the vaginal opening after complete mobilisation. The vault is closed securely with vault support incorporated into the closure.
Anterior Colporrhaphy
The anterior vaginal wall is repaired to correct cystocele — plicating the pubocervical fascia and restoring support to the bladder base.
Posterior Colporrhaphy & Closure
The posterior vaginal wall is repaired for rectocele if present. The vaginal skin is trimmed and closed. A pack may be placed for 24 hours post-operatively.
