Sacrohysteropexy
A laparoscopic procedure that suspends the uterus to the sacrum using mesh — correcting significant uterine prolapse while preserving the uterus in women who do not wish to undergo hysterectomy.
What is Sacrohysteropexy?
Sacrohysteropexy is a laparoscopic procedure in which a synthetic mesh is attached to the cervix and anchored to the anterior sacrum, suspending the uterus in its correct anatomical position and correcting prolapse without removing the uterus. It is a uterus-preserving alternative to hysterectomy for women with significant uterine prolapse who wish to retain the uterus — particularly younger women. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, as part of a comprehensive prolapse management programme.
Suitable for women with significant uterine prolapse who wish to preserve the uterus — typically younger or premenopausal women — and who are candidates for laparoscopic surgery with a mesh-based repair.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Port Placement
General anaesthesia is administered and laparoscopic ports are placed. The uterus, cervix, and sacral promontory are carefully assessed laparoscopically.
Presacral Dissection
The peritoneum over the sacral promontory is opened and the presacral space is dissected to create a tunnel for the mesh to pass retroperitoneally.
Mesh Attachment to Cervix
The mesh is sutured to the posterior and anterior aspects of the cervix using permanent sutures, providing secure attachment to the uterus.
Sacral Fixation
The mesh is pulled to the correct tension and fixed to the anterior sacral ligament, suspending the uterus in its normal anatomical position.
Peritoneal Closure & Recovery
The peritoneum is closed over the mesh. Hospital stay is two to three days. Pelvic floor physiotherapy and activity restrictions guide recovery.
