What is Diagnostic Laparoscopy?

Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a thin, lighted camera (laparoscope) is inserted through a small incision near the navel to examine the pelvic and abdominal organs directly. It provides unparalleled diagnostic accuracy for conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, pelvic adhesions, unexplained pelvic pain, and infertility where imaging has been inconclusive. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs diagnostic laparoscopy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, offering precise, same-day diagnosis with the option to proceed to operative treatment in the same sitting.

Suitable for women with unexplained pelvic pain, suspected endometriosis, infertility under investigation, abnormal imaging findings, or recurrent symptoms where non-invasive tests have not provided a definitive diagnosis.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Preparation

General anaesthesia is administered. The abdomen is cleaned and a urinary catheter placed. The patient is positioned in a slight Trendelenburg tilt.

2

Port Insertion & Insufflation

A small incision is made at the navel. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced to create a working space, and the laparoscope is inserted through the port.

3

Systematic Pelvic Survey

The uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, peritoneum, and pouch of Douglas are examined systematically. Findings are documented photographically.

4

Biopsy / Chromopertubation

Tissue biopsies are taken from suspicious lesions. Dye may be passed through the tubes (chromopertubation) to assess tubal patency in fertility cases.

5

Port Closure & Recovery

Ports are removed, gas is expelled, and incisions are closed with sutures. Recovery begins in the post-anaesthesia care unit; discharge is typically same day.
