Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy
A minimally invasive keyhole procedure to remove ovarian cysts while preserving healthy ovarian tissue — the preferred surgical approach for most benign ovarian cysts.
What is Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy?
Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is the minimally invasive surgical removal of an ovarian cyst while preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible. It is the gold standard for treating most benign ovarian cysts — including endometriomas, dermoid cysts, and cystadenomas — that are symptomatic, persistent, or of uncertain nature. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs laparoscopic cystectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, using precise technique to protect ovarian reserve and minimise the risk of recurrence.
Suitable for women with persistent, symptomatic, or complex ovarian cysts that have not resolved spontaneously, where imaging and tumour markers support a benign diagnosis and ovarian preservation is the goal.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Port Placement
General anaesthesia is administered and three laparoscopic ports are placed. The ovary and cyst are carefully assessed for size, type, and relationship to normal tissue.
Cyst Dissection
The cyst wall is carefully dissected away from the normal ovarian cortex using fine instruments, preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible.
Cyst Removal
The cyst is placed in an endobag and aspirated or removed intact through a port site, preventing spillage of cyst contents into the peritoneal cavity.
Haemostasis & Ovarian Repair
Bleeding from the ovarian bed is controlled with gentle diathermy or sutures. The ovary is reconstructed where necessary to restore normal anatomy.
Specimen & Closure
The cyst is sent for histopathology. Ports are closed; recovery begins immediately. Most patients are discharged within one to two days.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →
Removes the cyst while preserving healthy ovarian tissue and hormonal function
- →
Protects ovarian reserve — important for future fertility
- →
Minimally invasive with small incisions and short hospital stay
- →
Histopathology confirms the cyst type and excludes malignancy
- →
Faster recovery compared to open surgical approaches
- →
Can be combined with treatment of coexisting conditions in the same procedure
Every effort is made to preserve the ovary during cystectomy. Protecting ovarian reserve is not just about fertility — it is about long-term hormonal health and quality of life.

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy Cost in Hyderabad
The cost of laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy in Hyderabad depends on the type, size, number, and location of the ovarian cyst, along with the complexity of surgery and the patient's overall pelvic condition. Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which the cyst is removed while preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible when clinically appropriate. It may be performed for ovarian cysts in general and for endometriomas, also known as chocolate cysts, associated with endometriosis. The estimated cost ranges from ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,00,000, with an average cost of approximately ₹1,50,000.
| Procedure | Approximate Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Endometrioma (chocolate cyst) | ₹1,00,000 ₹2,00,000 |
| Cyst removal, ovary preserved | ₹1,00,000 ₹2,00,000 |
The actual cost may vary depending on the cyst's size, type, number, location, and relationship to surrounding ovarian or pelvic structures. Endometriomas may be associated with pelvic adhesions or other areas of endometriosis, which can make surgery more complex. The final estimate may also depend on pre-operative investigations, anesthesia, operating-room charges, duration of surgery, hospital stay, medications, pathology evaluation, and any additional procedures required.
Ovarian preservation is an important consideration in appropriate patients, particularly those with fertility goals. However, the extent of cyst removal and the amount of ovarian tissue that can be safely preserved depend on the individual clinical findings.
Factors Affecting Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy Cost
The cost of laparoscopic cystectomy can differ from one patient to another because ovarian cysts vary considerably in their size, type, and complexity. A detailed evaluation helps determine whether cystectomy is appropriate and how the surgery should be planned.
- →
Type of ovarian cyst: Endometriomas, functional cysts, dermoid cysts, and other cyst types may require different approaches to evaluation and treatment.

Type of ovarian cyst: Endometriomas, functional cysts, dermoid cysts, and other cyst types may require different approaches to evaluation and treatment.
- →
Cyst location: The position of the cyst and its relationship to the normal ovarian tissue or nearby pelvic structures can affect surgical difficulty.
- →
Endometriosis and adhesions: Endometriomas may occur with pelvic endometriosis and dense adhesions, which can require additional surgical work.
- →
Pre-operative investigations: Ultrasound, MRI in selected cases, blood tests, and other assessments may be required before surgery.
- →
Surgical complexity: Cysts that are difficult to separate from normal ovarian tissue or surrounding structures may require more time and careful dissection.

- →
Additional procedures: Treatment of associated endometriosis, adhesiolysis, or other pelvic conditions during the same surgery may increase the overall expense.
- →
Pathology and follow-up: Examination of the removed cyst tissue, post-operative medicines, follow-up consultations, and recovery care can also affect the final cost.
Insurance Coverage for Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy
Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy may be covered by health insurance when the procedure is considered medically necessary for a covered ovarian condition. Coverage depends on the diagnosis, policy terms, waiting periods, exclusions, insurer guidelines, and pre-authorization requirements. Patients should confirm their policy benefits, applicable limits, and cashless treatment eligibility with their insurer before planned admission.

Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist & Laparoscopic Surgeon
Dr. Ashwani Narla, Consultant Obstetrician, Gynecologist & Laparoscopic Surgeon at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, evaluates patients with ovarian cysts, endometriomas, endometriosis, and other gynecological conditions. During consultation, she reviews symptoms, menstrual and reproductive history, previous treatments or surgeries, examination findings, and relevant ultrasound or other diagnostic reports. She assesses the type, size, and location of the ovarian cyst and determines whether laparoscopic cystectomy is an appropriate option. When surgery is considered, the consultation may include discussion of ovarian preservation, fertility-related considerations where relevant, possible treatment of associated endometriosis or adhesions, surgical approach, expected recovery, potential additional procedures, and estimated treatment cost.
