What is Detorsion?

Detorsion is the laparoscopic untwisting of an ovary that has rotated on its vascular pedicle, cutting off its blood supply. It is a time-critical procedure — the sooner detorsion is performed, the greater the chance of ovarian recovery. Counterintuitively, even an ovary that appears dark or discoloured at laparoscopy should be detorsed rather than removed, as the majority of these ovaries recover normal function once blood flow is restored. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs emergency detorsion at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, with a strong focus on ovarian conservation.

Indicated for women presenting with acute onset unilateral pelvic pain and imaging findings consistent with ovarian torsion — a gynaecological emergency requiring urgent laparoscopic intervention to preserve the ovary.

How the Procedure Works

1

Emergency Preparation

Urgent assessment confirms the diagnosis clinically and on Doppler ultrasound. Consent is obtained and the patient is prepared immediately for emergency surgery.

2

Laparoscopic Access

General anaesthesia is administered urgently. Three ports are inserted and the pelvis is surveyed. The torsed ovary and number of twists are assessed.

3

Detorsion

The ovary is gently untwisted using laparoscopic graspers, rotating it in the correct direction to restore the normal anatomical position and relieve the torsion.

4

Viability Assessment

The ovary is observed for five to ten minutes after detorsion to assess for return of normal colour and texture, indicating restoration of blood flow.

5

Additional Procedures

If a cyst is present, cystectomy may be performed. Oophoropexy is considered if recurrent torsion risk is high. Oophorectomy is a last resort for non-viable tissue.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • →

Restores ovarian blood supply and preserves ovarian function in the majority of cases

  • →

Even visually compromised ovaries frequently recover normal function after detorsion

  • →

Avoids unnecessary oophorectomy and its permanent impact on fertility and hormones

  • →

Emergency laparoscopic approach with rapid recovery post-procedure

  • →

Concurrent ovarian cystectomy can be performed to reduce recurrence risk

  • →

Oophoropexy can be added in high-risk cases to prevent future torsion

"

The appearance of the ovary after torsion is deceptive — dark and compromised-looking ovaries recover far more often than people expect. We always untwist first and wait before deciding.

Detorsion Cost in Hyderabad

The cost of ovarian detorsion in Hyderabad depends on factors such as the severity and duration of ovarian torsion, whether the ovary remains viable, diagnostic investigations, the surgical approach, and the care required before and after surgery. For ovarian torsion where the ovary is considered viable, the approximate cost of detorsion ranges between ₹90,000 and ₹1,70,000, with an average estimated cost of around ₹1,30,000.

Procedure Approximate Cost Range
Detorsion cost Shared after consultation
Detorsion treatment cost ₹90,000 – ₹1,70,000

The actual treatment cost may vary based on the patient's medical condition, test results, surgical complexity, anesthesia charges, hospital admission, investigations, and any additional treatment required.

Factors That Influence Detorsion Cost

The overall cost may depend on:

  • →

Severity of ovarian torsion: The degree of twisting and the impact on blood circulation to the ovary may affect the complexity of the procedure

  • →

Condition of the ovary: If the ovary remains viable, detorsion may be considered to release the twist and help restore normal blood flow. The final treatment decision is based on clinical and surgical findings.

  • →

Diagnostic tests: Investigations such as ultrasound, blood tests, and other assessments may be required to evaluate the condition and plan treatment.

  • →

Type of surgery: The surgical technique selected and the complexity of the procedure, including laparoscopic surgery where suitable, may influence the overall expenses.

  • →

Hospitalization and recovery care: Admission duration, medications, monitoring, follow-up visits, and other post-operative requirements can contribute to the total cost.

Is Detorsion Covered by Insurance?

Ovarian detorsion performed as medically necessary treatment for ovarian torsion may be eligible for health insurance coverage. The extent of coverage depends on the patient's policy terms, inclusions, exclusions, and insurer approval requirements. The hospital's insurance assistance team can help with the required documents and guide patients through cashless or reimbursement procedures.
