What is Hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and is the most definitive treatment for a range of gynaecological conditions — including symptomatic uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, abnormal uterine bleeding refractory to other treatments, and selected cases of uterine prolapse. It can be performed laparoscopically, vaginally, or via open surgery. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs hysterectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, using the least invasive approach appropriate for each patient to minimise recovery time and maximise outcomes.

Suitable for women with severe or refractory uterine conditions — fibroids, adenomyosis, abnormal bleeding, or prolapse — who have completed childbearing and for whom conservative treatments have been inadequate.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Positioning

General anaesthesia is administered. The surgical approach — laparoscopic, vaginal, or open — is selected based on uterine size and clinical indication.

2

Uterine Mobilisation

Supporting ligaments and vessels are identified, ligated, and divided systematically, mobilising the uterus from surrounding pelvic structures.

3

Uterine Removal

The uterus is detached at the vaginal vault level and removed through the vagina, a port site, or abdominal incision depending on the approach used.

4

Vault Closure

The vaginal vault is closed securely with absorbable sutures. Haemostasis is confirmed and any concurrent repairs are completed at this stage.

5

Recovery

Drains are placed if needed. Hospital stay is two to four days. Graduated mobilisation begins day one with full recovery achieved in four to six weeks.

Hysterectomy Cost in Hyderabad

The cost of hysterectomy in Hyderabad depends on the reason for surgery, severity of symptoms, size and location of the uterus or fibroids, surgical approach, pre-operative investigations, and hospital and recovery requirements. Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus and may be considered for conditions such as uterine fibroids or persistent heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding when other treatment options are not suitable or have not provided adequate relief. The estimated cost ranges from ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000, with an average cost of approximately ₹1,85,000.

Procedure Approximate Cost Range
Definitive treatment when childbearing is complete ₹1,20,000 ₹2,50,000
Considered for persistent symptoms when childbearing is complete ₹1,20,000 ₹2,50,000

The actual cost may vary from the estimated range depending on the patient's condition and the type of hysterectomy recommended. Factors such as uterine size, fibroid size and location, severity of bleeding, previous abdominal or pelvic surgery, diagnostic investigations, surgical approach, anesthesia, hospital stay, medications, and any additional procedures can affect the final treatment cost. A personalized estimate is provided after consultation and evaluation.

Factors Affecting Hysterectomy Cost

Hysterectomy is not performed in exactly the same way for every patient. The surgical approach and level of care required depend on the underlying condition, overall health, uterine anatomy, and whether additional pelvic conditions need to be treated at the same time.

  • →

Underlying condition: The reason for hysterectomy, such as fibroids or persistent heavy menstrual bleeding, can influence the evaluation and treatment plan.

  • →

Size and location of fibroids: Large or multiple fibroids may make surgery more complex and can influence the surgical approach.

  • →

Severity of bleeding and symptoms: The extent and persistence of symptoms may determine whether hysterectomy is considered after other treatment options have been evaluated.

  • →

Type of hysterectomy: The procedure may be performed through a vaginal, laparoscopic, or abdominal approach depending on the patient's condition and clinical suitability.

  • →

Pre-operative investigations: Blood tests, imaging, pelvic examination, and other evaluations may be required before surgery.

  • →

Surgical complexity: Previous surgeries, adhesions, enlarged uterus, or other pelvic conditions may increase the complexity of the procedure.

  • →

Anesthesia and hospital stay: Anesthesia, operating-room charges, admission, monitoring, and recovery care contribute to the overall cost.

  • →

Additional procedures: Treatment of associated pelvic conditions or other procedures performed during the same surgery may increase the total expense.

  • →

Post-operative care: Medicines, follow-up consultations, monitoring, and recovery-related care may also contribute to the final cost.

Insurance Coverage for Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy may be covered by health insurance when it is medically necessary for conditions such as symptomatic uterine fibroids or persistent abnormal uterine bleeding. Coverage depends on the diagnosis, medical indication, insurance policy, waiting periods, exclusions, insurer guidelines, and applicable pre-authorization requirements. Patients should confirm their policy benefits and cashless treatment eligibility with their insurance provider before planned admission.
