Dilation and Curettage
A short surgical procedure involving gentle dilation of the cervix and scraping of the uterine lining — used for diagnosis, treatment of abnormal bleeding, incomplete miscarriage, and retained products of conception.
What is Dilation and Curettage?
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a short surgical procedure in which the cervix is gently dilated and a curette is used to scrape or suction the lining of the uterine cavity. It is used both diagnostically — to obtain tissue for histological examination — and therapeutically — to remove abnormal tissue, treat incomplete miscarriage, or manage retained products of conception. Dr. Ashwani Narla performs D&C at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad, typically combined with hysteroscopy for greater diagnostic accuracy and precise targeted treatment.
Suitable for women requiring uterine lining sampling for diagnosis of abnormal bleeding, management of incomplete or missed miscarriage, removal of retained products of conception, or treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding in selected settings.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Positioning
General or regional anaesthesia is administered. The patient is positioned and the cervix is cleaned and examined before dilation begins.
Cervical Dilation
The cervical os is gradually dilated using graduated dilators to allow the curettage instrument to pass safely into the uterine cavity.
Curettage
A sharp or suction curette is used to systematically sample or remove the uterine lining. Tissue is collected carefully for histopathological examination.
Cavity Assessment
The uterine cavity is assessed during and after curettage to ensure adequate sampling and to identify any residual retained tissue or pathology.
Recovery & Discharge
The procedure is completed as a day case. The patient is monitored briefly before discharge. Tissue is sent for histopathology; results guide further management.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →
Provides tissue for histological diagnosis of abnormal uterine bleeding
- →
Effectively manages incomplete miscarriage and retained products of conception
- →
Short day procedure with rapid return to normal activities
- →
Can be combined with hysteroscopy for direct visualisation and targeted sampling
- →
Relieves symptoms of retained tissue including pain, bleeding, and infection risk
- →
Low-risk procedure with a well-established safety profile
D&C combined with hysteroscopy gives us both the diagnosis and the treatment in one sitting — seeing exactly where the pathology is before we sample or remove it makes all the difference.

D&C may be used in selected cases of uterine polyps, heavy or irregular bleeding, and incomplete abortion or retained products of conception. The estimated cost generally ranges from ₹25,000 to ₹55,000, with an approximate average cost of ₹40,000.

Factors That Influence Dilation and Curettage Cost
Several factors can affect the overall cost of D&C depending on the reason for the procedure and the patient's individual treatment requirements:
- →
Reason for D&C: The procedure may be performed for evaluation or treatment of abnormal bleeding, selected uterine polyp cases, or removal of retained tissue following an incomplete abortion
- →
Diagnostic investigations: Ultrasound, blood tests, pregnancy-related assessments, or other investigations may be required before the procedure.
- →
Biopsy and pathology: When tissue is collected for examination, laboratory and pathology charges may contribute to the overall cost.
- →
Anesthesia: The type of anesthesia or sedation used during the procedure can affect the treatment expenses.
- →
Hospital and recovery care: Day-care or hospital charges, medications, monitoring, and follow-up consultations may contribute to the final cost.
- →
Additional treatment: If further procedures or medical management are required based on the findings, the overall treatment cost may increase.
Is Dilation and Curettage Covered by Insurance?
Dilation and curettage may be covered by health insurance when it is medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of an eligible gynecological condition.
